Most Popular Photos

High level view of the Rocinha favela, the largest in Rio de Janeiro and likely all of Brazil. Home to the most violent drug lord, under no circumstances should travellers walk around the favelas on their own.

Rocinha, the largest of the many favelas blanketing Rio's mountainsides, is the only favela to have its own designated bus line. While official government population figures are not collected, it is estimated that Rocinha alone contains hundreds of thousands of residents.

Some of the most dangerous, violent and most impoverished area of the Rocinha favela borders the rock on the outskirts. Here houses are increasingly makeshift and violence is a daily occurance. Estimates are that each day on average, 15 people are killed within a favela.
